Lifeguard

The Houston County Board of Education is seeking a lifeguard to join their team at the aquatic facility. This non-exempt position reports to the aquatics coordinator/teacher and is responsible for a variety of tasks to prevent injuries at the facility, including lifeguarding, water rescue, water tests, and safety procedures.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  1. Observe patrons and practice preventative lifeguarding by following and enforcing pool rules and regulations.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in swimming and water rescue functions.
  3. Identify problems either visually or by auditory means in order to be alert to life saving needs.
  4. Perform water tests and record results as required.
  5. Maintain safe procedures and keep the facility clean at all times.
  6. Maintain surveillance in assigned areas until relieved or dismissed.
  7. Maintain familiarity with emergency action plan/rescue plans and safety equipment.
  8. Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to job assignments.
  9. Follow all federal and state laws, as well as Board policies.
  10. Performs other duties as requested.

Qualifications:

  1. Valid and current lifeguard training certification, current CPR, first aid, and AED certification required. Must pass lifeguard pre-employment skills test.
  2. Ability to read and comprehend job specific technical information, simple instructions, short correspondence, memos and position specific manuals. Ability to write correspondence and reports. Ability to effectively articulate and present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  3. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole number, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to conduct position related data analysis. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  4. Ability to facilitate the problem solving processes. Ability to synthesize workable options from given facts, and assist in the development of workable solutions.
  5. Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office and other job specified technologies.
  6. Ability to interact effectively with colleagues, administrators, teachers, staff members, students using tactful yet effective skills. Ability to collaborate well with others and display a cooperative attitude. Service oriented and actively seek ways to assist others.

Professional requirements include serving as a role model to students and maintaining appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards.

Physical demands include walking, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, crouching or kneeling occasionally, and travel to home sites, school sites, and other locations. The employee is frequently working in outside weather conditions with a usually moderate noise level in the work environment.
