JOB SUMMARY:
This position performs skilled finish and rough carpentry and cabinetry work in maintaining, repairing, and constructing furniture; and building fixtures and wooden frameworks for structures. Employees in this class perform carpentry duties necessary to construct and maintain structural woodwork and equipment by using standard carpenter tools and power-driven woodworking machinery and makes or repairs furniture and cabinets. Work assignments are received orally or in the form of sketches, blueprints, or written instructions, and employees apply personal knowledge and skills in completing such assignments. Most positions in this class involve scheduled visits to an assigned number of schools to review requests for carpentry work. Work is checked through personal inspection by supervisor and through discussions on difficult problems encountered. Supervision may be exercised over one or more assistants of a lesser grade.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Repairs and maintains doors, floors, windows, roofs, stages, and other building fixtures.
• Adjusts, repairs, and replaces locks, door checks, hinges, and other hardware.
• Renovates offices and rooms; constructs ceilings and partitions and installs new paneling, floors, doors, shelves, and trim.
• Lays out, cuts, and joins lumber to construct the wooden framework for structures, including walls, floors, and roofs.
• Cuts, fits, and joins lumber in the construction of various furniture pieces and building fixtures such as cabinets, bookcases, desks, counters, bulletin boards, shelves, portable blackboards, doors, windows, and picture frames.
• Makes new parts, repairs, and builds chairs, tables, cabinets, and doors; operates power saws, electric drills, sanders, wood lathes, power joiners, planers, and other tools and equipment as part of shop operations.
• Repairs and replaces lockers and bleachers.
• As member of roof crew, removes skylights, repairs roofs, and installs gutters and downspouts.
• Cleans and patches tile floors, and occasionally lays tile.
• Maintains regular attendance and punctuality.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency. Experience in performing a variety of skilled carpentry tasks. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools of the trade with particular emphasis on the maintenance of building fixtures or cabinetry.
• Working knowledge of carpentry construction work.
• Skilled in the use and care of hand and power tools of the trade.
• Skill in effective communication, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to plan, lay out, and perform skilled carpentry work.
• Ability to read and follow work diagrams in maintenance and construction projects and to make accurate estimates on time and materials.
CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Current and valid Georgia commercial driver's license is required. Ability to work overtime as needed. Satisfactory completion of a job skills test may be required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
(Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) Ability to lift items weighing up to 100 pounds, work in inclement weather, and work from ladders, scaffolding, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
May be required to work hours other than the regular schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays. This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee's physical presence at the workplace.
