The Softlines Sales Manager position is responsible for the overall management and execution of operational excellence for the entire store, with additional specific focus on supervision and management of team members in Softlines Sales (which includes Apparel and Footwear). It directs and coordinates activities through subordinate team leads and other team members. It is a leadership position and is expected to effectively drive the overall performance of the store through the effective supervision, communication, and coordination of the team members. Through this important work, the Softlines Sales Manager leads the team and drives the goals that directly impact customer satisfaction, store profitability, and Academy's Purpose.

Job Description:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred.

Work Experiences:

  • At least three years of relevant work experience required.
  • Demonstrated success in leading departments of up to 40 people to drive operational excellence and sales targets.

Skills:

  • Exceptional supervisory and management skills; ability to coach department members on store policies, protocols, and expectations; leads by example and drives team performance.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.
  • Effective problem solving and communication skills with customers and team members.
  • Strong business acumen, understanding of business implications of decisions, market knowledge, and an orientation to profitability.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret business-related information and regulations.
  • Clear and persuasive communication skills; active listening skills.
  • Proficiency in report writing, business correspondence, and presentation.
  • Decision-making skills based on common sense and reasoning.
  • Working knowledge of inventory software, order processing, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office.
  • Basic mathematical skills and ability to follow instructions in various formats.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Full-time position averaging 45-50 hours/week.
  • Manage the execution and operational excellence of the store.
  • Participate in personnel decisions for the Softlines Sales team, including hiring, training, discipline, and development.
  • Provide direction to the Softlines Sales team and oversee daily operations to ensure excellent customer service.
  • Develop strategies to meet operational goals and manage staffing, training, and scheduling.
  • Manage workforce productivity and process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with sales, safety, and security practices and regulations.
  • Supervise departmental zoning and standards adherence.
  • Assist in the execution of delegated assignments from the Store Director.
  • Participate in floor walks and implement improvements based on feedback.
  • Audit firearm sales for compliance with federal and state laws, including ATF Form 4473 and background checks; sign off as final approver.
  • Complete Firearms Sales Certification and Power Industrial Truck Certification training.
  • Complete Academy Leadership University.
  • Oversee the talent lifecycle, including hiring, onboarding, and coaching team members.
  • Enforce company policies, procedures, and safety rules.
  • Adhere to work hours and management policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, with flexibility for role changes.

Physical Requirements & Attendance:

  • Regular communication, standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands.
  • Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds; frequent lifting up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception, and focus adjustment.
